As this is the first time we're featuring undergraduate research in the MCB Transcript, Professor Jeremy Thorner asked that we also feature Angela Duvalyan's research since she recently graduated. Impressively, Duvalyan had three papers as an undergraduate honors student in Thorner's lab.

Thorner notes, "Angela, whose family came to the USA from Armenia, is a prime example of the wonderful success that can be achieved by those who seek refuge in our nation and are given the opportunity to thrive."

Duvalyan says, "working in Thorner Lab was one of the best decisions I made as an undergrad. It gave me an opportunity to directly apply my school work to relevant scientific research and taught me the importance of dedication in science." She is currently a medical student at Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The three undergraduate papers that Duvalyan is a co-author on:

"The carboxy-terminal tails of septins Cdc11 and Shs1 recruit myosin-II binding factor Bni5 to the bud neck in Saccharomyces cerevisiae." Finnigan GC, Booth EA, Duvalyan A, Liao EN, Thorner J (2015) Genetics 200: 843-862.

"Coordinate action of distinct sequence elements localizes checkpoint kinase Hsl1 to the septin collar at the bud neck in Saccharomyces cerevisiae." Finnigan GC, Sterling SM, Duvalyan A, Liao EN, Sargsyan A, Garcia G 3rd, Nogales E, Thorner J (2016) Mol. Biol. Cell 27: 2213-2233.

"Detection of protein-protein interactions at the septin collar in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using a tripartite split-GFP system." Finnigan GC, Duvalyan A, Liao EN, Sargsyan A, Thorner J (2016) Mol. Biol. Cell 27: 2708-2725.
