The Molecular & Cell Biology PhD program will provide limited emergency funding (available on a rolling basis) to fully registered students, in good academic standing, who encounter a financial emergency or other unanticipated expenses that cause a financial hardship for themselves or their dependents.
Eligibility: You must be a registered full-time student in good academic-standing in the MCB PhD program. Funding is for financial emergencies that you incurred within 3 months of submitting this form.
Eligible Expenses:
- Travel emergency (e.g. unexpected travel home for family emergency)
- Medical emergency* (e.g. unexpected hospital bill not covered by insurance)
- Housing emergency* (e.g. home untenable to live in)
- Transportation emergency (e.g. issues with main form of transportation)
- Food emergency* (e.g. unable to pay for groceries because of missed payment)
- Childcare emergency (e.g. unexpected loss of childcare for dependents)
Ineligible Expenses (not limited to):
- Technology expenses
- Educational or lab-related expenses
- Standard or elective medical expenses
- Medical or dental expenses incurred by seeing out-of-network provider
- Visa or immigration costs
- Moving expenses
- Legal expenses
- Vacation expenses
- Standard living expenses
Things to note: These awards are not loans and are not required to be repaid. Awards will be disbursed through Cal Central and may be subject to taxation. These awards are not reimbursements, however, we do ask for proof of the expense that you incurred. Requests for emergency funding will be considered on a rolling basis and eligible requests will be considered as long as funding is available. Requests from students who have not previously received emergency funding will be prioritized.
